A Cleaner Regional EnvironmentThe V-REMS partnership shares best practices and leveraged information to improve the quality of the regional environment. Based on the best practices and collective knowledge, V-REMS partners have implemented initiatives that have led to cleaner air, a reduction in stormwater impacts, and reduced solid waste streams.
| - V-REMS partners improved air quality for over 20,000 children in the Richmond and Hopewell School Districts. V-REMS joined with Richmond and Hopewell School Districts to successfully apply for an EPA Clean School Bus USA grant for $286,000 to retrofit school buses in these districts with cleaner technologies.
- V-REMS partners have supported the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) efforts to reduce regional ozone emissions in order to address the region’s non-attainment status. V-REMS partners have collectively reduced ozone emissions by improving the efficiency of heating boilers, switching to hybrids and electric vehicles, using CNG and alternative fuel vehicles, and switching to low-VOC paints.
- V-REMS partners actively involve themselves in the regional air quality planning process by participating in the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s Local Planning Organization Meetings to address and support public policy issues.
- Over half of the V-REMS partners are members of the Virginia DEQ’s Environmental Excellence Programs (E2, E3, E4).
- Five V-REMS participants won Chesapeake Business for the Bay awards for their effort to improve stormwater effluents: DSCR, Hopewell Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility, US Navy, Fort Lee, and Ukrops Supermarkets.
- Four V-REMS participants are in the EPA’s Performance Track program: DSCR, DuPont, EPA Region III Headquarters, and Qimonda.
