General Description
The Hopewell Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility (HRWTF) is a 50 million gallon per day publicly owned treatment facility that treats approximately 85 percent industrial waste. The facility is located approximately 21 miles southeast of Richmond, Virginia and discharges to the James River. The facility was built in the mid 1970s as a pure oxygen activated sludge secondary treatment system with incineration for sludge disposal. In order to comply with the Chesapeake Bay nutrient criteria, HRWTF is currently evaluating the installation of nutrient removal technology. As a part of its commitment to a cleaner environment, HRWTF continues to sponsor the Virginia Institute of Marine Science underwater grass studies in the James River. Results of these studies will be used to monitor the success of meeting the Commonwealth of Virginia Tributary Strategy goals to restore underwater grass beds in the James River.
