Virginia Environmental Information

Virginia is home to a number of excellent organizations focused on improving the quality of the environment in Virginia.  The following is a list of many of these organizations with brief descriptions of the role that they play in Virginia.

Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources: advises the Governor on natural resources issues and works to advance the Governor's top environmental priorities.

Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ): aims to protect and enhance the environment for the benefit of the public. Virginia citizens play an important role in DEQ activities

Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR): works with Virginians to conserve, protect, and enhance their lands and improve the quality of the Chesapeake Bay and our rivers and streams, promotes the stewardship and enjoyment of natural, cultural and outdoor recreational resources, and insures the safety of Virginia's dams.

Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy: enhance the development and conservation of energy and mineral resources in a safe and environmentally sound manner in order to support a more productive economy in Virginia.

Environment Virginia: brings together the public and private sectors of Virginia to exchange information and transfer technology to help resolve environmental issues in the Commonwealth.

Go Green Virginia: hosted by the Virginia Municipal League in an effort to promote green practices among local governments, the website features green tips, a green glossary, information about regional forums, and related articles and columns.

VA Tech PeerCenter: offering an Environmental Management System (EMS) Implementation Course for local, state and federal government agencies, with guidance to public entities in utilizing this cutting-edge approach for managing their operations and services.

Businesses for the Bay: is a voluntary team of forward-looking businesses, industries, government facilities and other organizations within the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
